The TerraTrek team has been in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina this week, with a focus on WATER. The good news: we’ve met with more amazing people who are eager to share their work and thoughts on behalf of our environment and we have been graciously hosted by the very cool Fontana Dam Resort and Marina while we film. The not-so-good news: we’re here investigating and filming the plastics and garbage pollution in Fontana Lake, a man-made lake mostly within the National Park, and we have been staggered by the magnitude of the plastics pollution, both historical and continuing, here in America’s most visited National Park.Keep following TerraTrek as this serious environmental challenge and inspiring volunteer effort will be the subject of one of our upcoming short films.#terratrekus #environment #nature #earth #fontanalakeresort #nationalpark ... On the TerraTrek expedition, deep in the woods of western North Carolina, and aware that there is a lot to be thankful for as this challenging 2020 moves along. Thankful for all the enthusiasm for our environmental mission from everyone we've met. Thankful for the inspiration we're feeding off from those fighting for the environment as if all of our lives depend on it (it does!), especially the youth we've met with from University of New England, and the Appalachian Youth Climate Coalition. Thankful for those providing support for our mission by hosting us along the way. Thankful for the beautiful nature and healthy land that its still possible to see as the journey moves along. We're really just getting going, and there already are so many stories that we need to extract from our cameras and notebooks to tell the world. Thanks for coming along!!! ... See MoreSee Less
The TerraTrek expedition is winding south through New England as the fall foliage season is winding down. Fall colors never get old! How will climate change affect fall foliage? Well, the answer isn’t encouraging. Maybe fall foliage isn’t at the top of the reasons that heading off global warming is so important, but it certainly adds to the list. The higher temperatures, increased precipitation and cloud cover, and higher nitrogen that go along with climate change all will combine to mute fall colors. A big unknown is the possible migration of important ‘color’ trees like maple north into Canada, and what species might take their place. Another impact of global warming that’s already affecting foliage trees like maple, ash, elm, and others is the proliferation of exotic pest species of insects and invasive plants. There’s a very good chance that the legendary New England fall foliage will become something viewed only in memories and digital pictures. So many people gain so much enjoyment from “leaf peeping.” One more reason for all of us to work together to reverse global climate change! For more information, please check out https://biology.appstate.edu/fall-colors/will-global-climate-change-affect-fall-colorsTo learn what you can do to help make a difference, please visit the TerraTrek website and take the TerraTrek pledge! https://terratrek.org/terratrek-pledge/ ... Simplicity in nature. Sometimes, all it takes is a reflection in a puddle. An overly busy mind disappears and its replaced by a wonderful emptiness of "in the moment" focus. Consciousness without thought. Nature takes me there.#nature #naturephotography #outdoors #outside #maine #travel #spiritual #spirituality #healing ... See MoreSee Less
Saunter outside today!Hiking - "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, 'A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."- John MuirFor more stories, please subscribe to our newsletter at https://upscri.be/078173 ...
